Wood Science doctoral student Sudip Chowdhury awarded 2009 Eastman Summer Fellowship in Analytical Chemistry & Polymer Characterization.

It is a pleasure to announce that Sudip Chowdhury, a PhD student in the Department of Wood Science and Forest Products (under the direction of Prof. Chip Frazier) has been awarded the 2009 Eastman Summer Fellowship in Analytical Chemistry & Polymer Characterization.  Selection to participate in the Eastman Chemical Company Fellowship Program reflects the high regard that Eastman holds for the graduate program in Polymers.

Each year, the Eastman Chemical Company awards three summer fellowships for the academic year in the field of analytical chemistry or polymer characterization.  The summer fellowship consists of a 3-month $5,500 stipend plus a $500 unrestricted department grant.  Sudip was chose based on his research entitled "A molecular level interpretation of the mechanism underlying the wood-adhesive bond durability enhancement due to hydroxymethyl resorcinol (HMR) treatment".  In his work he uses different analytical techniques like, DMA, DSC, static/dynamic FTIR and XRD to investigate the effect of HMR (a remarkable wood adhesion promoter) on wood.  The primary goal is to get a better understanding of the nature and organization of in situ wood polymers and how polymer mobility and organization affect macroscopic wood-adhesive bond durability.

We congratulate Sudip on receiving this recognition and look forward to watching the further progress of his research.
