Thrusts

A key aspect of the past success of the MI faculty has been their ability to direct their expertise in areas of emerging national importance.  As such, we have identified four central thrusts are featured as part of the near-term efforts of the MI:

(1)   Advanced materials and processes for proton exchange membrane (PEM) based fuel cell energy systems;

(2)   High performance adhesives and composites for the 21st century;
(3)   Advanced materials for biomaterials, membranes, sensors and actuators; and
(4)   Nanostructured materials for self-organization and solvent-free processing. 

All four thrusts build upon expertise available at Virginia Tech and are focused at critical national needs.  For brevity, key features of each thrust area are summarized in the links below.
