Young Scientist Experience
The Macromolecules and Interfaces Institute is excited to announce the 3rd Annual Young Scientist Experience (YSE), a K-12 Outreach Program. This program is held in conjunction with the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) at Virginia Tech as a part of the Research Experience for Undergraduates in Field Responsive Materials.
The SURP program, funded by the National Science Foundation for the past 20 years, enables undergraduates from across the country to conduct summer research at Virginia Tech.
During the 2007 Young Scientist Experience, middle school students from southwestern Virginia teamed with SURP mentors to work in areas at the forefront of scientific research. The YSE science and engineering projects were developed around the topics of: 1. Electrospinning polymeric nanofibers; 2. Electrochromic devices; 3. Fluids responsive to magnetic fields; and 3. New PEM fuel cell designs (our collaborators in the PEM Fuel Cell REU directed this YSE project with a group of rising 8th graders). The Downtown Merchants of Blacksburg provided space for the public to see the demonstrations and visit with the teams at Steppin’ Out, August 3, 2007.
We are now accepting applications for the 2008 Young Scientist Experience.
